Get the most from sending your child on a English language holiday

The traditional way to improve your English

Traditionally Students are sent in groups to a foreign country. They stay in dorms as a group where there can be anything from twenty to a few hundred students. The daily schedule is normally English Classes in the morning and some sporting activities in the afternoon. The typical duration is 2 weeks The experience is great fun for children/ teenagers, however, there is a limited benefit to improving their English.

The challenge with this approach is that students are surrounded by children of the same nationality for the duration of the stay..

The impact of this is as follows:

  • They will revert to talking their native language as it is easier to converse in that way
  • They have no opportunity to practice what they are learning in the English lessons
  • No opportunity to practice conversational English with people who speak English as their first language

The end result is that opportunity to improve English from being in another country will is not capitalised on. In addition, they do not get to experience what normal life or culture is like in the country they are visiting.

The new way to improve your child's English

The more recent approach to Language travel and improving a child's English or second language is through total language immersion. The approach of total language immersion has been fine-tuned and adopted by HEBE Adventures. It is a completely different approach to what is outlined above.

What we have found is that international students in many cases have been studying English from a young age. There general level of English is very good and in essence, what is required is an environment where they have to practice speaking English.

Total Language Immersion puts the student in an environment where they live life as a local, living with a host family and attending camps/ schools/ work that is mainly attended by local children/ teenagers.

Private English lessons can also be provided if required and the learnings from these lessons can be applied immediately with their host family or in the summer camps.

With this approach they get 3 key benefits over the traditional approach:

  • Because they living with a local host family that are not fluent in the students' first language it is an environment where they have to speak English
  • The camps they attend are for local children, therefore, they have to practice their English while they are attending camp.
  • Living with a host family and being part of the family, immerses the student in family life, outing, sports etc. They get to experience the culture of the country and what daily life is like.

Overall it is a much more complete and rewarding experience and very advantageous from improving their conversational English. They also make new often life long friends in another country.

Hear from one of our Students

“My daughter enjoyed 2 weeks with a great host family near to Dublin, they were so kind and made her feel at home. I highly recommend HEBE Adventures, Clare knows perfectly what the families wants and she makes it possible. Thanks Clare.”

“Jorge, my 15 year-old son had a great experience at McGovern’s family last summer. Angela, her husband and kids looked after Jorge in all possible ways making him feel comfortable. They took him to a soccer game, Dublin shopping, etc and Jorge started to be more confident with his English speaking skills. I am really grateful to the camp organization and family, still in contact with them and planning a visit for this coming summer.”

“Becoming a host family is something we hadn’t thought of in the past so when HEBE Adventures set up – we thought why not give this a try – we contacted the fab Clare who was very helpful as we were a bit nervous. Our household is busy with 4 children and we were not sure if this is something we could do, but at the same time we wanted to open our home to kids to help them gain experience with an Irish family and to encourage them to speak English.

With Clare’s guidance and help this is definitely one of the best experiences we have had – it has been brilliant – we provide term cover and it’s lovely to see the boys wanting to come back to us after each visit. We have brought them to GAA matches, horse riding, swimming, bowling – they take part in everything we do and really fit in with the family – and it’s lovely to sit at meal time and listen to the craic and their stories – fantastic experience to date and highly recommend Clare and HEBE Adventures!”

“We wanted to really really really thank you for welcoming Harold in your family for the last three months. He’s had a very pleasant experience. We really want to thank you and Tom, Killian Oisin and Shane. Clare thank you very much for remaining available for the whole stay. This is very valuable as well.”

“Thank you for taking care of my son….Alejandro came home very happy, with lots of stories and has a great memory of your family. Thanks for everything.”

“I’ve sent my son to Ireland with HEBE Adventures and it works great. 100% recommended. Clare, the manager, is very kind and always willing to help. Having someone like that close to your child is imperative.”

“Clare Davitt has been the Guardian for my son Nicolas during his academic year in Ireland. She has been of great help for him to feel comfortable and safe. She has been worrying about every possible aspect of his stay at school and taken such good care of him during weekends and breaks.

I am really grateful for helping my son enjoy this year and for making me feel so confident that he was being taken care. We could not have had a better Guardian.”

“It was my first time hosting and I was not sure what to expect. It was a very enjoyable experience for me. Mateo was a super student to have a first time hosting experience with. He was very easy going and flexible.

My youngest son was initially very shy and awkward with Mateo but after I had a chat with him, he became less awkward and I think he began to bond better with Mateo and they began to get on quite well.

This was a good experience for my son also. I hope Mateo had a good time and has as fond memories of his time with us as we have with him.”

“My kids did HEBE’s Virtual Host Family Experience and it was great! They were able to “live” with their Irish family, listen to their chat, discover all about their family, see their home, learn some techniques of Gaelic Football, do some Tik-Toks, make biscuits…. all in English!! A fantastic opportunity to interact, practice all they learn at school, learn new words and expression in the best way – using them. Very recommendable!
The kids were able to connect be themselves without my help, so I got some time out – the Irish parent supervised the activities And the family was fantastic, super friendly.”
