Clare Davitt began hosting international students as a way to help her four children experience other cultures, meet new friends, and broaden their horizons. It also didn't hurt that it was a nice way for a full time mum to make a few bob.
But she quickly realised that the traditional systems didn't really work. Most international students had spent their time in dormitories or classrooms with a large number of other students from the same country. Hosting a student in an Irish home was a much more immersive experience and better for everyone involved.
Robert Davitt (Clare's son) then built a database for Clare to help her manage all the incoming trips, as well as for the Host Families to be able to use when an upcoming trip was being organised. Robert is constantly upgrading and improving the system to fit the needs of all of our customers.
Rohan Perera came on board to help out with trying to bring this vision to a wider audience. When Rohan was 15, he went to stay with a Host Family in France, and although it was an incredible experience for him, it was an experience that could have been managed better. The agency they dealt with hadn't allowed his parents to be in contact with the Host Family before the trip so Raomal Perera (Rohan's dad) flew over to meet the family first to ensure they were a good fit.
We at Hebe want to give our Parents, and our Host Families that peace of mind from the get go, so you don't need to worry about where your child is going, or who is coming to your home.
With 18 years of experience working in PR, Sales and Customer service in Coca Cola, an interest in Irish tourism, and extensive experience raising a family, Clare was in a unique position to rethink how kids from all over the world could experience new languages and cultures. And so, HEBE Adventures was born in 2017. Named after the Greek God of Youth and pronounced "He-bee", we have been creating unique Home Stays for young international travellers for over five years. Not focused merely on students, we help any young travellers find a home-away-from-home and experience different cultures in a truly immersive and safe manner.
Now with over 600 host families we're excited to provide young people from all over the world with a safe and unique way to experience new cultures.
The new Hebe was born, led by Rohan and Robert, and the vision is to remove the barrier to movement. Today, over 950,000 children travel abroad to stay in a stranger's home. Hebe removes the barrier, and enables the children to meet with the host family prior to their travel. Hebe is the Airbnb of Student Travel.
The Hebe founding team has a mix of youth and experience and has many unique characteristics that exemplifies the power of diversity. Raomal (who is the executive chairman) is 63 and from Sri Lanka, Robert is 19 and Rohan is 31. Two families have come together with a father/son and a mother/son combination.
